About
Mike Nowson leads Atelier Terra from Noosa, Queensland. The practice takes a small number of commissions, each given the attention the brief deserves. Work spans luxury residential boutique hospitality and retreat properties across the Sunshine Coast, the hinterland and internationally.
Mike is ARBV registered (#1024) and an A+ Member of the Australian Institute of Architects since 2006. His writing appears at Thinking, considered essays on climate, material and the craft of building.
Track record
Twenty-five years of architectural practice. The body of work spans luxury residential at scale, hospitality (winery and gallery, restaurant remodels, ground-up restaurants, café fit-outs and golf-club interiors), and resort architecture in the Pacific. Earlier institutional and civic work delivered under the 3iD name extends the body further still.
Atelier Terra is the deliberate concentration of that practice into a small number of luxury residential, hospitality and resort commissions. Fewer projects. A more unified approach.
The team
Atelier Terra is a small senior team of architects, interior designers and technicians — Noosa-based, and built specifically to service luxury residential and boutique hospitality commissions. Several have worked with Mike for more than a decade. The continuity is what allows design intent to survive intact through documentation and construction.
The studio is one of three sister companies in the 3iD group. Technical documentation, contract administration and statutory compliance are handled by 3iD Studios, the group's commercial and delivery arm. Interiors and furniture sit with Casa Noosa.

International immersion
Eighteen months lived in Bali sits behind the practice's reading of tropical regional architecture. Continuing time in Lombok and the Indonesian archipelago extends that body of reference. Time in the south of France and Monaco brings the Mediterranean tradition into the same conversation: warm regionalism, architecture that sits in its climate and its site.
