Atelier Terra's residential work is built on a single conviction: a house should be designed for the way you actually want to live, not the way a building type suggests you should. The modernist precision is there in the spatial clarity, the structural logic, and the resolved plan. What the practice returns to it is warmth. In the material, the threshold, the quality of atmosphere that makes a house feel irreplaceably yours.
Mike Nowson leads every stage personally, from the first site visit to the final detail.
What a residential commission involves.
Every house begins with the site, not the brief. Mike walks the land at different times of day to read the light, the breeze, the canopy, and the relationship between built and unbuilt, from there a long, unhurried conversation about how the owners actually want to live shapes the program. The rhythms of mornings, weekends, guests, kitchens, gardens.
Hand sketches resolve the spatial concept before any computer is opened. The discipline of committing line to paper forces the threshold strategy, the roof logic, and the material direction to be decided early, not deferred. Once the concept is resolved, full BIM documentation, council engagement and contract administration are delivered through 3iD Architecture, the studio's documentation partner. Design leadership remains entirely with Atelier Terra.
How Atelier Terra approaches residential design.
Subtropical climate is the starting point of every plan. A deep northern overhang sized to the winter sun angle, cross-ventilation drawn through the section before a window is placed, thresholds that dissolve the line between inside and out. These are not stylistic choices. They are the conditions of comfort in this climate.
Material selection is led by what the site asks for and how a material ages. Hardwood, stone, rammed earth, board-formed concrete, raw steel. Every material is chosen for how it ages, not how it photographs.
For commissions where interior detail and furniture quality are read at the same standard as the architecture, The Complete Home (Atelier Terra's co-branded service with Casa Noosa) delivers architecture, interior design and furniture curation as a single commission. Nearly forty years of regional relationships sit behind the curation.
